Feb. 26 Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
This afternoon I was within 8 feet of
a partly albino ♂. I saw him hiding
on the levee of the main ditch about
100 yards north of the picnic ground.
His back was a silvery gray, as was
also his tail feathers. When I got that
close to him, he flushed so that I
wasn't able to see any more detail
than that.
March 19 Today Dr. Leopold brought 30 members of
his Wildlife Management class up to the
ranch for a sex ratio pheasant census.
We ran the census through rice stubble,
along tule-filled ditches, through old star
tistle patches, and open ground. The
results were as follows: 1) ♂, 28 ♀, 1 unknown;
2) 9 ♂, 39 ♀; 3) 12 ♂, 69 ♀, 1 unknown. This
comes to a total of 22 ♂, 136 ♀, 2 unknown,
or a ratio of 16 ♂ to 100 ♀.
May 16
a hen with 5 young was seen this afternoon.
The young were able to fly a short distance.
