Aug 16, 1957 Area #2, no of sheep, The western portion of this area, largely or entirely west of Highway 87 is much the best - magnificent vistas, interesting topog- raphy varied cover of grass, antelope, jumper & pinon on bluger ridges, one (at least) small grove of Ponderosa pine northwest of Chugwater Creek, cottonwood & willows in stream hollows and several running clear streams. The Chugwater Creek is murky, - there is a railroad along it and numerous ranches, some prosperous appearing, however, most mediocre. The Horse Creek Oil Field contains perhaps 25-30 derricks, some pumps working, but all we saw remarkably clean and actually affecting the surface very little. Perhaps some 400 sq. miles north of the Oil Field & west of Highway 87 is the best. We did not get into the southwest corner but it appeared very similar to the northwest portion west of highway 87; Ownerships appear to be very large cattle ranches, cattle in good condition but not as fat as those in Flint Hills. We saw 2 small groups (6-10?) of antelope in northwest corner, also 1? golden eagle, & fewer dark birds than in P.B.
