Grand Canyon From Vermillion Cliffs Lodge to South Canyon, via [illegible] Nov. 14, 1930 Snow had set in the night before, but was not falling in Horse Rock Valley. The Caretaker at Horse said that deer are not so plentiful in this east slope range as in previous years. Hunting was [illegible], at least temporarily. The deer winter down on the juniper slopes, even to the edge of the [illegible]. He were told by an old-timer at South Canyon that there are only about 1/5 as many deer on this east winter range, as there are on the west. The country seemed like ideal deer country, except that browse is very scarce. He saw about 50 head of cattle grazing in the Horse Rock Valley. He saw no buffalos. They had been to [illegible] the day before for water, and were reported to be down in the low places out of the wind. He were also told at [illegible] that there are no antelope in the valley.
