Lake Mead Recreational Area
1949
Aug 7-8 up Lake with Baggle,
Belberop, Com. Strauss, McPhail (in charge of power for BP), Nielsen & Warren
of Project Clearing, Poyser & Jordan.
Spent night at Sandy Point, where
incidentally most of northeast beach
are gone by high water as driftwood
& trash floats in cleaves. South
side of Sandy Point exposed to wind
still wonderful beach at high water.
Aug 8 up Canyon to rapids -
above Bridge Canyon Dam site, perhaps
44 miles above Pearce Ferry.
Tremendously impressive canyon
walls topped by thick strata
resembling Redwall limestone about
the same all the way as that near
mouth of Canyon. About Quarter-
master's ranch gorge of granite
& gneiss begins to join up & finally
shapes into gorge about 600 ft. deep
at BCD site.
At this muddy stage of upper end
of Lake with 12 to 15 ft. thermal second
gate of water about el. 1197, it is impossible
to differentiate between end of lake
reservoir & beginning of river. Silt
apparently very close to surface all
way to lower end of Canyon - A bit
