ompson 481 Elkha River May 3, 1934 This morning we interviewed Ranger H - H. Vallad off the Elcha. Results: Estimate, 500 for Elcha drainage. Normally their winter range is outside of the monument. About 16 hunters went up last fall but got no elk because late winter had not driven them out of the monument. No overgrazing so far as Vallad knew. Large part of old winter range is now under reservoir, Lake Mills. 18 sections in the monument have never been in the game preserve. This sector is bounded by Bowman Creek on north, then south ½ county line & east to monument corner on county line. Cougars have been hunted in here this winter. Michaels, CWA predatory animal hunter under Couch has taken 6 or 7 cougars this winter in the region. Deer more abundant on Elcha than seewhere in forest. In recent years (2 or 3) a band of 52 has been seen at one time in Humge's field. Deer are hunted extensively here, particularly in the 18 sections inside the monument. In hard winters the elk have gone over through the farms within few miles Ocean & Port Angeles. Browse is same as on west side.
