Bogachiel Guard Station to Hyack & Return
April 26, 1934.
It is about 11 1/2 miles from Bogachiel G. S.
to Hyack. Trail leads up river and ups
North Fork. All the way (and Muriel reports
it for about 3 miles beyond) there is a
dense undergrowth of huckleberry, Salmo-
berry, vine maple, ferns (both sword and
"elfe brake" and some bracken), salad
and oxalis as well as others of less forage
value. There were signs of elfe browsing
but no over-browsing.
A band of perhaps 10-12 elk was
flushed about 6 miles up the river.
He could not get an accurate count in
the dense underbrush. Elk tracks
were, however, numerous all the way.
The bulls are reported to winter higher,
in the mts. We saw only a few bull
tracks.
A few deer tracks were seen, but
on the whole, not abundantly.
One or possibly two cougar's tracks
were seen at intervals along the
trail.
Aplodontia holes are common.
Muriel picked up 3 bobcats droppings
and one bobcat's tracks were seen on
the trail.
A flock of crossbills was heard.
