9/1 Mesa Verde National Park Elevation 6700 - 8500 ft. Nov. 8, 1930 Interview with Marshall Framer, acting Superintendent. Wild Turkey here in the park at present. Seven were seen in one flock a year ago by a ranger. Turkeys were sacred birds of the cliff dwellers, who used their feathers for clothing & their bones for implements but did not eat the meat. > Mt. Lions are on the mesa, few Coyotes, Swift Fox Bob Cat Mule Deer, estimated 300. Porcupines very abundant. Have injured much Pinyon Pine in certain critical areas. 34 por- cupine have been shot. The trees in front of the Palace Ruin are in the most critical area. Another seriously damaged area is up near Park View Point on the north rim: > Eagle: are present. An eagle 4 years ago, caught a full grown Bob Cat, 15 lbs., carried it by its back, soared 1800 ft. high with it then down to its nest where it tried to drop it in the nest, but missed.
