Thompson 449. Carlsbad April 2, 1934 From Carlsbad, up Rocky Arroyo, to Dark Canyon watershed, over Queens Mesa to Lincoln Forest fire look-out. Practically all of the mesa country lying north of the Cavern is unsuitable for parks purposes. It is utilized by cattle and goats and is of no outstanding scenic value. Grass & browse range are generally good, except in spots near ranches, water-holes or camps, where overgrazing is in some cases severe. Particularly is it bad around ranchers. Characteristic vegetation: Pino edulus, Juniperus monosperma, J. pachyloia, several other junipers unidentified by me, Pinos ponderosa on higher or protected sites, great variety of oaks, Cercocarpus lanatus, yuccas, Sagavos, ephedra, etc. This region appears to be serving its maximum utility at present and should not be considered for park purposes. Ranger Perry Corvis accompanied me.
