Grand Canyon
March 17, 1934.
Today I drove over the Grand View
region, down into the Tuzayan Forest
about 10 miles on the old Cameron road
& the old Flagstaff road, as well as
around the quarry & down to Berry's
ranch. This gave a good cross section
of the worst grazing area.
Within the Park, near Grand View,
the range is in deplorable condition.
Gamble Lake is a mass of dead stubs.
Cowania killed outright in some places,
left stably in others, etc., showing all
degrees of utilization.
Within the national forest, the
same condition exists for several
miles south of the park boundary.
Logging is recent & selective here, but
it has not obliterated the signs
of over-grazing.
Further south, a good grass
country is entered. Grass grows
abundantly under the yellow pines.
