Yesterday I rode from Kanale to Ryan
across the sagebrush flat. The lower
part of the valley is covered mostly with
Atriplex confertifolia. As the valley rises,
Artemisia tridentata predominates. The
region is without grass except in a few
localities. Three jackrabbits and several
coyote tracks were seen. Signs of one
flock of domestic sheep in the region
previously were observed.
Today I rode from Ryan to Slide and
then over into the White Pockets area.
In general, the Cowania has been utilized
just as heavily this winter as last, in
spite of the fact that the winter is unusually
mild (there is no snow where we rode).
Such at least, is my impression from the
day's ride. To be specific, on the more
heavily used ridges, the current growth on
Cowania has been browsed to stubble 1" long
in many instances; the average is perhaps
between 2"-3" of new growth left. And
the range looks still deplorably over-
browsed.
