427. Kane Canyon, North & South Feb. 27, 1934. Total deer count for the day # 101. The deer are located as they were last year, that is, within the first mile of the canyons which cut into the plateau. They seem to concentrate within this narrow strip of winter range regardless of weather conditions. This winter there has been practically no snow. A light snow, perhaps 6" fell on top of the plateau on Feb. 23-24. No snow lies around Kane, and only a few light patches, perhaps 1" deep, upon top of Little Mountain. Yet the deer are in the same locality where we saw them last year. The range appears to be supporting more cattle this year than last; the Forest Service, however, is fencing the entire forest, which will make it possible to regulate the number of stock utilizing the forest. Cougar is showing utilization in spots on the ridges, particularly in sunny open places relatively free from juniper and pinyon. But only certain plants show browsing, although a number of deer had concentrated at these & stripped others nearby.
