423. San Rafael Oct. 29, 1933 No mammals seen other than the horses. Bird life scarce. Birds seen today: Pintor jays - numerous Rock wren - 1 raven - 1 horned larks - 12 juncos - 2 Chickadee - 3 San Rafael Canyon to junction with Ferrof Creek October 30, 1933 The gorge was perhaps from 700 - 1100 ft. deep in jolaces, red sandstone, vertical cliffs and a few domes; several large side canyons from the south. Withal very picturesque, wild & desolate. Water anywhere in the vicinity is strongly alkaline. Soil & rocks covered with dry alkalai dust. Rickers and aluplant along river course. Canyon may have cliff dwelling ruins. One probable one was examined superficially. It netted 2 corn cob, a burnt fragment of earth and one partial arrowhead.
