San Rafael Region, Utah
Oct. 27-28, 1933
Oct. 27, 2:00 PM., we left Ferron. Party of Roger M. Toll, La grande Suvasie (guide), and I. Direction southeast toward San Rafael Swell, or the Sinbad region.
The first 10 miles were through a Sarcobatus bad land, similar to bad lands around Julia City. Route then leads up Coal Wash to its head. Terrain rises; endless Zion formations through rarely over 400 to 500 ft. height. Water holes scarce along the creeks & water alkaline.
While region heavily overgrazed by sheep, cattle & wild horses. Near top of Coal Wash juniper & pinyon country entered. Few extensive grama grass flats.
Area appealing as a wild frontier but seems unsuitable as a park or monument. It is exceedingly desolate, alkaline, devoid of vegetation, dry and reported very hot in summer & cold in winter.
Outstanding flora:
Pinus ponderosa
Pseudotsuga taxifolia
