Thompson 411. Mammoth to Floating Island Lake Oct. 8, 1935 Day sunny warm & clear. Beaver pictures were taken at the lake this afternoon between 2:00 and 3:30 PM when the sun got behind Crescent Hill. One large adult beaver was about 150 feet west of the lake cutting open when I arrived. I took 3 pictures of it, during which time it appeared rather unafraid. 9 beavers were seen at the lake. 6 or 7 of them were working out from the pond where I came. One beaver in the lake slapped its tail and immediately all the beavers on land scurried down into the water. Here they swam around for about half an hour watching me & slapping the water. Two beavers at the bark off of open logs in the water. If beverer another beaver would come near those eating would growl. It sounded somewhat like a cat's growl. They were never seen to use their tails for anything except to slap the water, and of course for swimming as a balanced part of their anatomy.
