Mammoth to Trumpeter Lake
Oct. 7, 1933.
Trip from 1:30-6:00 PM. Day sunny and warm.
Two miles west of Floating Island Beaver Pond a Dwarf Weasel (Mustela vison) was observed running about in the talus below the road. Its breast & under side of neck were a yellowish buff. Tail black tipped. Appeared to be 8 or 9 inches total length. Movements absolutely silent. From the same point I saw the Trumpeter Swan leave family over on a pond by Hell Roaring Creek. Ben Arnold reports that they started flying last Monday Oct. 2, 1933. He says that on the first flight the cygnets could hardly fly to the adjoining lake. Since then they have flown all over the region. The gray ones are getting noticeably lighter, but there is still a difference in color.
