405 of elle were out in the valley, Each group of cows & calves was accompanied by a buggling bull, and the woods in back rang with their calls. A few lone yelle bulls & cows were seen. Four or five buffalo were seen at the edge of the timber (certain count impossible). About 3 miles from these, one lone buffalo bull stood a very large gaz on the roadside & refused to move when we drove within 20 feet of him. One coyote seen in Sugar Lake Flats opposite Swan Lake about 8:00 PM. The day was clear & cold. Heavy frost in the morning. The range seen up Pelican Valley is badly denuded. We never seen the hills so bare, Every rock stood out & the hills were practically bare. Considerable goose lay on the floor of the valley. Little springs & lake seeps usually so wet were mostly dry. Pelican Creek itself is almost dry.
