406 possible. Mallards were heard, two Buffle-heads seen, perhaps 50 Canada geese. On the bay, 12 swans (probably Trumpeters) were swimming in pairs. They moved out toward open water but did not trumpet or fly. About 1 mile west of the Oxbay nest on EE road, a great gray owl was seen by the road. It flew among the trees & was soon lost from sight. It appeared to be larger than either of the two seen previously this season. In Pelican Creek meadow opposite mouth of Astrigint Creek, a very large coyote watched us from about 4 mile distance. Up Pelican Creek all throughy it flows through timber, cells were heard singing continuously from every side. Sometimes several at once. Cell & fresh buffalos tracks everywhere seen. Judging from the sign, perhaps 100 buffalos had recently (within a week) moved into the valley. Time precluded our visiting Fern Lake. Fern Lakes covered with a thousand!
