402. was possible. This crop has grown well & the grasses are well started. It is Baggley's intention to leave the area alone & not attempt to farm it. Another area of about 20 acres has been cleared of sagebrush in an experiment & oats sown. Unfortunately the seed was impure & the future patch is a tangle of lamb's quarters. It is Baggley's purpose to try planting grasses there to see whether forage can be produced in sufficient stand to effect a return on the sage. I think that the experiment is doomed to failure: 1. The region is too arid. 2. Sagebrush is very persistent. 3. Irrigation would be necessary. 4. It is apt to accelerate erosion by demanding the soil. The acquisition of this area cannot materially relieve the elk situation at present, because elk wandered over the region before it was acquired. By stopping its use for domestic grazing herds more forage will be available to elk in the future.
