393. Lake of the Woods long after the regular mating season. At least all these unusual factors suggest such an explanation. The swans have already lost all their cygnets. No sign of them was found. Wright walked around the lake & found no sign of a nest. It is probably in a slough on the far side where he was unable to go. Their breeding ground is also on that side of a promontory. About 30 ducks, too far out to identify were on the lake. Aug. 15, 1933. From 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. & drove from Mammoth to Old Faithful. A coyote in fine tawny reddish pelage was seen by the road at 7-mile bridge; about half a mile north, two does were seen. A black bear was at Apollinaris Spring; a bull elk with antlers in the velvet, fully developed at Norris; about 12 elk in Gibson Meadow. About 40 elk and 3 sandhill cranes (immature) in lower geyser basin and marsh lawns
