388. the willows frequently. One Starmigan seen near the Pabo. Conies & Marmots were heard incessantly above timberline. Just north of Goat Lake and about down to timberline elk tracks & droppings became numerous. This must be a part of the summer range of the McGraw or Cow Creek Herd. Mac Saughlin reported seeing 11 elk a year ago grazing in the cirque above Goat Lake. One Golden Eagle seen on trail here today. Down in the valley of the North Fork of the Thompson river, for about 3 miles down the ranger station, willows in the meadow showed signs of hard browsing. Whether this is due to elk or domestic stock in past years is uncertain. The willows show improvement. From the Ranger Station to McGraw, the trail crosses bridges & Goose West and Cow Creeks. Lodgepole, Timberline, Doug. Fir, Engleman Spruce, Yellow Pine, Aspen, Alders, Cercocarpus, Jamesia, Ribes, Raspberry, Thimble-uckle, Purshia & grass make up the cover. This is the more arid rocky portion of the park and the only part so far seen which is suitable cougar country. Mac Saughlin.
