380. winds, lasting sometimes for days, seem to drive the elk into the aspen groves where they remain during the periods of wind. It is at these times, I think, that elk bark the aspens. About a week ago he saw about 85 elk upon Trail Ridge, above timberline south of the road. This is above Forest Canyon & about where J. Dixon saw them in 1930. Near the North Sleet (just south of Flat top Mountain) on Andrews Peak, Denyer reported seeing over 100 sheep about 2 yrs ago. He did not get an actual count. Mac also reports seeing 75 Mt. Sheep above timberline on Trail Ridge in this spring. Between 4:00 and 5:00 PM this afternoon we watched a band of 9 "Bighorn" at Sheep Lakes. One young ram was seen among them; it was impossible to tell whether the others were all ewes or mixed. They were shedding their winter coat, pieces of which lying down in tags and shreds. There was no sign of scabies or any other disease noticable to me. All were fat and in excellent condition. One remained "on guard" above the flock the entire hour we were present.
