May 28, 1933
Interview with D.E. Hogan who first came to Flagstaff in 1890, came to Canyon in Nov. 1890. Has been in region ever since.
Cattle ranged from Flag. to Canyon in winter only. Power's Hill dug for 1890. Grass/limber grass was abundant everywhere on the plateau, & all through the cedars. Peavine abundant in the canyons: Not nearly so much now. More underbrush then than there.
Down on Forts Plateau, Bicycle Grass & bunch grass abundant. Not near so much now.
Deer more abundant then than now. Supairs hunted deer & traded buckskins for Navajo blankets.
Many wintered along breaks of Canyon. More water holes now than then - They went long distances to water.
Mt/Sheep used to be abundant in Canyon or, Used to be abundant on S.F. Mts. Hogan killed 6 in one bunch on S.F. Mts. None on SF Mts since 1898 approx: Two sheep at Hogans spring now - seen a month ago. Are in good condition.
Domestic sheep wintered south of canyon but not along runs
