343. 15 Miles east of Barstow Two desert tortoises Apr. 23, 1933. each about 5 inches long were seen within half a mile of each other: They were crossing the road. About a mile further east a side-winder was crossing the road. This was about 10:00 A.M. In contrast to other snakes which I have seen on pavements, it could move as fast on the asphalt pavement as on the ground. Its locomotion appears like a rapid writing obliquely forward, its body always kept in "S" loops, never out longitudinally. Its head was kept up and it rattled con- tinuously. The horns were quite conspicuous.
