Other Observations for the day:
2 recently dead deer
8 dead cows
1 live jack rabbit.
Cowats Camp to Little Saddle
March 10, 1933.
No change in range was noted today
except that more jumpers & less
Coyania grow in this area. Hence
it was more difficult to count deer.
I am sure that we saw less than
20% of the deer today. We would often
see fresh deer tracks showing where
the deer had bounded away from
me, yet we caught no sight of the
animals themselves. Everywhere along
the canyons to the west, the high
points & ridges are browsed the
most severely. The so-called "points"
are no inconsiderable part of the
winter range.
Dropping down on to the Sandrock,
after the blaze event, we saw 13
deer on this area in one band. It
soon grew too dark to see others.
We frequently heard coyotes howl
from the Sandrocks. Cattle are more
numerous here. Still, only about
