forest. Twenty-five cougars are estimated as being in the forest. Juleuder saw one cougar track last year and one track was seen the year previous. In 1927-28, Jack Butler, local lion hunter, killed 49 cougars in the Sowats Canyon region. I cannot consider the estimate of 25 as anything more than a guess. But everyone has faith in Butler's estimate. The years Butler took the lions from Sowats Canyon area, it is reported that he made $ 9000. one winter from two hunting parties. Last summer, Butler & Brooks hunted cougars in the Powell Saddle area. They "turned up 2 or 3 fresh tracks" but the heat caused the dogs to play out before the cougar could be streed. Certainly, cougars are not a controlling factor at present. Last year, Butler trapped about 250 coyotes on the forest. This is reported to have considerably controlled their numbers. Several coyote tracks were seen today, but it was impossible to keep a count of them. Butler used decapied fish heads & entrails as Coyote bait.
