West Kaibali
March 5, 1933.
From Slide to White Pockets Area.
The range seen today appeared, in general, to be more heavily overgrazed than much of that seen yesterday.
Everywhere, the sage showed marked improvement, but most of the Coruania new shoots were severely browsed. That is, where it was untouched it would range from 6"-12" new shoots, but where browsed, most shoots were 2"-4" long. The range, while showing some improvement, still shows too heavy utilization.
Julander, the range specialist, says that cattle browse Ephedra more than deer do, but that Coruania is choice forage for both.
Most of the grass in the region is Stipa. Some Atriplex canescens is on the range and is choice cattle food. It shows heavy browsing.
Green grass is just appearing. Snow 1-2 feet deep is on all shaded slopes, but sunny slopes are clear.
Other items seen:
6 bald eagles
10 ravens
titmice, bluebirds, robins, junco jays.
1 coyote
