328. Reference Yellowstone Park Feb. 28, 1933. Chief Ranger Brookes told me at Grand Canyon Lodge this evening the following account: In winter of 1918-19 the first trappers (Jones & another man from Cody) trapped an area adjacent to south boundary of Yellowstone (about 12 miles south by 20 west, covering Thorefare district.) Brookes visited their camp. Their furs were on poles outside of tent. About 50-60 martin skins, 2 beautiful cross fox, and several coyote skins were there. Brookes bought the fox skins for $150. When his wife took them to furrier in Denver she was offered $800. Each man that winter cleared around three to four thousand dollars. Charlie Fessler was trapping in the region south of the park in those years. He started with practically no capital. Brookes has also informed me that he planted fish in the lake along the Arlton Freight Road both inside & outside of the park.
