Grand Canyon Lodge at Lee's Ferry Bridge, Arizona Feb. 28, 1935.
Today Cliff Ranger Brookes and I drove from the lodge to Burches, a distance of 26 miles into Horseroock Valley. The snow is usually gone from valley floor and lower winter range at this time, but today snow lays over the entire valley about 6 inches deep, melting down into snow patches at certain places. Roads almost impassable.
At the recent buffalo hunt 2 bulls and 7 cows were killed. Two of the cows had foetuses. 95 buffalo are now in the herd. They water at the "Pool" a spring at the base of Vermillion Cliff opposite Burches store. Water is also found in the valley at Cain, Horserock and at the "Seeps" which are just north of the corner of Vermillion Cliff. The Grand Canyon Cattle Co. still holds water rights in the valley. There is very little dry grass on valley floor & a small type of arid shrubs. Range in very poor condition. Some cattle, horses, and sheep & goats winter in the valle
