Today I drove over to Foxe Morgano at Crump Lake to look for Pelicans.
They were scattered singly and in groups over the lake. From 8-10 AM the lake was watched with binoculars. About 200 White Pelicans were counted, about 500 Canada Geese, many ducks which I could not get near enough to identify, 2 pairs of Sandhill Cranes, and several Black-crowned Night Herons & Great Blues.
The lake is very shallow everywhere--tules & marsh plants grow in clumps & islands throughout. Heart Lake is just an overflow of Crump & is likewise very shallow. The geese were mostly on Heart as I drove around the east side of it. There is one tule island in Heart Lake, but the Pelicans & gulls do not nest there. They nest near the south end of Crump according to Heidle.
Morgan said he had trapped 15 minks around the lake about 5 years ago. 9 of the pelts were 22 inches long & 6 of them were 24, all beautifully matched. He has also seen weasels & otter. Everyone in the region says coyotes are increasing damagingly & that the pest trappers are no good.
