Mammoth to Washburn
to Canyon to Norris.
283.
July 14, 1932
This morning Dr. Castler & I drove to
the top of Mt. Washburn to get coneys pictures.
When we got there the day had become
so cloudy, cold & windy that it was
impossible to find coneys. The ranger on
top the mt. reported that 5 adult sheep
with 3 lambs had been seen in the
morning. Thirteen had been seen a few
days previously.
On the south slope of the mt.
well up toward timber line we saw
a black bear & 2 cubs. They paid
little attention to us when we stopped
& made no effort to come to the car.
They were all in good condition, & were
eating herbage.
On the road to Canyon we encountered
another bear & cub. They were eating
and grass. The adult
ate an Arnica? blossom also. These
bears were typical hold-up bears but
they kept eating herbage as long as
no one would feed them. [illegible]
15 bears, all blacker & browner,
were seen in the Canyon region as
we drove through. They were scattered
around the camps, incinerator, & down
the road. All were begging, and all
in gaunt condition.
