Molly Island 7011P5017 280. July 12, 1932. 52 adult pelicans flew off the island as we approached. Most of the young pelicans were between 10 to 20 days old. They formed in 2 pods just where their nesting grounds are. The nests on top of the island have not yet hatched. Apparently none of the young pelicans had been in water yet, just a few took to water after we had been banding for some time. Some of them outflew to Pelican Island - about 1/4 mile. One banded one was found on the beach dead 1/2 mile south of the island. Apparently died of cold & exhaustion. We banded 100 of the young pelicans. Bands numbering from A716809-A716899 inclusive. We counted 104 young & 22 unhatched eggs. Some eggs picked by gulls while we on the island still had liquid yolks. The young pelicans disgorged fish when we approached. One fish disgorged by a young bird was 10" long. Some of the young are beginning to show black wing quills. Very few dead pelican young were found dead on the island. The mouths of many had patches of parasites in the pouch. Young gulls were all over the island, it readily took to the water. They are much more precocious.
