Thompson Crater Lake Hike to Union Peak with Godfrey Oct. 13, 1930. Birds seen: Crossbills, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Crested Bluejay, Red-tail Hawk, Raven, Oregon-jay. No tracks were seen, except one deer track. Marmots were gone. Godfrey said they went into hibernation about Sept. 15, and would come out April 15. Golden Mantles & Chipmunks & Conys are still out. He looked over the western winter range of the Rogue River headwaters again of the area south of the park. Godfrey showed me the Pine Beetle ravages & the control work. The little is discovered by the presence of small pitch & saw dust marks on the trunk where the worm penetrates. Infected trees are cut down & lopped. The sun
