Yellowstone
June 13, 1932
Grinwald showed me a Spotted Sand-
piper's nest with 4 brown spotted eggs.
The nest was in the grass about 10 feet
from the River bank (Slough Creek). He
had also found another one on the
opposite shore.
As we returned, it had become
quite dark. A young badger, looked
about 1 year old since it was 3/4
the size of an adult, was blinded by
the lights just as we approached
the Yellowstone River bridge. The
badger was confused, but finally
started to run across the bridge.
It attempted to jump through the
iron lattice of the railing, then
ran on up the road. Grinwald got
out and chased it for about 200
gardes to see how fast it could
run. He easily overtook it. It
ran ahead of the car for about
1/4 mile, then disappeared in the
dark.
A few miles west of Crescent
Hill a band of elk cows crossed
in front of the lights. I could not
count them all but I thought there
were about 20 adults & 10 calves
of this year. Three of the calves
were confused & walked in front
