For this trip on which we saw 7 resident Trumpeter Swans, see notes of J.M.H.
Carl Russell reported seeing 20 Swans on Yellowstone River just below the lakes, about 4:00 PM in the afternoon.
He also saw 1 Sandhill Crane by Henry's Lake.
June 13, 1932
Arriving at the Lakes about 6:15 P.M.,
I found no swans. I waded out to the next [illegible] and found the 4 eggs well covered and still warm. The next pile of tubes is about 12 ft. in diameter and about 18 inches high. It is quite dry, and very clean in spite of having been used for several years. Just as I left the lake, one Swan soared overhead, called loudly, and settled in the water. It kept calling for half an hour, at which time we left the lake because we could not wait to see it go to the nest.
Griswold had a half-grown Magpie which he had found along Slough Creek, out of the nest. The little bird rode everywhere on Griswold's shoulder without fear. He had fed it hard boiled egg. He returned it to a nest with 3 other young ones. The nest
