Specimen Ridge Range 233. impson Yellowstone June 3, 1932. For May 31, June 1 see notes of G.M.N. Today we left Roosevelt Station about 10: AM in company with Dave Madven & Babe La More; took horses to the top of Specimen Ridge & returned across the Hayden River valley north of Junction Butte. Along the entire trip there were the usual signs of over- browsing, the high-water marks on all trees & shrub or the dead stumps of young aspens. But the grass was in splendid condition. Many elk antlers were seen scattered all over Specimen Ridge. Several bands of elk, number- ing up to 15 in one band, were seen. 5 elk calves of this year were found. Three of these were running with the herd I must have been from 1-2 weeks' old. One young one was found in the grass almost at the top of Specimen Ridge. It balked when we stroked it, but did not run away. It was perhaps 2-3 days old. Returning by Trumpeter Lakes, we saw the swan on its nest, about 3:30. There were intermittent snow storms all day & the day was cold. 19 antelope were seen in a band near Trumpeter Lake, but no deer found.
