mpson 217 Yellowstone May 20, 1932 5 deer were seen on the Parade Ground as we came into Mammoth. The deer are still in shaggy coat although their coats are beginning to look a bit ragged & they seem to have many ticks. These deer have a black tipped tail which is entirely white toward the dorsal base. 4 muskrats were seen along the Yellowstone River (one of them in Pelican Creek). All were swimming on the surface. Many marmots in dark red pelage were seen everywhere. A census of water birds, taken enroute to Jewel Lake, but not on the return, developed the following: male female Mallard 17 14 Canada Goose total of 35 Coot " " 2 Barrow's golden-eye 10 11 Bufflehead 6 5 Merganser 5 6 Green-winged teal total of 4 Eared Grebe " 7 (mating plumage) Pelicans (white) " " 4 (Yellowstone Lake) Calif. Gulls " " 16 Ospreys occupied in Yellowstone Canyon. Spotted Sandpiper total of 5 Killdeer " " 6 Great Blue Heron 1 Barnswallow Crane 1 at Norris, flew high & called for about 10 minutes. Disappeared.
