ompson 213 Bird Island, Salt Lake, Utah. The pelican colonies. The gulls made a continual cry at our inflextion: Several swooped at our heads and screeched just as they passed; but none struck me. Mr. Madsen said that a few years ago, when his boy was on the island with him the gulls swooped & struck the boy on the head making his head bleed. 30 Great Blue Herons were seen I saw 1 nest with 2 young herons which appeared to be about 1 week old. 1 American Merganser, female, was seen. (Note: Mr. Madsen estimates 8000 pelicans on Bird Island). He had never seen so many pelicans and gulls on the island before. He passed about 100 grebes (Eared Grebes?) enroute to the island. There was much variation in the size of pelican eggs. I found one nest within 2 eggs about the size of duckling eggs, but slightly longer- some white like the pelican eggs. They looked abnormal. Possibly pelican eggs from an abnormal female. The shells were very rough.
