American White Pelican 211 mpson Bird Island, Salt Lake, Utah May 15, 1932 Today was delightfully clear, with rolling waves on the lake and a light breeze. We left Camp 10, about 2 miles west of Salfine, at 11:15 and arrived at the island in about 1/2 hours - about 9 miles distance. Pelicans (adult), we counted and estimated about 34000; Mr. David M. Madison of Salt Lake, for 10 years State Fish & Game Commissioner, estimate that there are never more than about 1/2 of the adults at the island during the day. The rest are out fishing in Utah Lake, Bear Lake and various other places. This would make the Bird Island colony about 7000 adult white pelicans. Mr Madison also says that about 60% of the Bird Island colony has always nested on Gunnison Island some 20 miles northeast of Bird Island. He did not get to visit Gunnison, but if the same is true this year, there may be around 10,000 pelicans on Salt Lake. The nests on Bird Island ranged from new nests without eggs, nests with 1 egg, nests with 2 eggs, nests with young just hatched, nests with young just hatched and 1 young covered with down.
