Tompson Yosemite Valley N.P. Nov.28/31 Interview with Colonel Thompson, Supt. The lower portion of the valley will be better trained to keep deer away from the camps. With good dogs properly spotted & handled, he thinks the bear problem is 30% solved. Some of the bears that have been trapped & taken out of the valley did not return. Others have returned. The trapping will continue, & weights & ages are recorded. Warning against bear feeding have been posted all over the valley. The situation is much better than in the past although not solved yet. Coysters: There has been much agitation against the parks are breeding den of coysters & other predators in the Mariposa & Merced papers. Coysters have greatly increased in the valley in the last 2 years. Therefore, the Colonel had 5 coysters shot on the floor of the valley, & intends to "play up" this control. The sentiment outside the park is adverse to any new parks addition on this predatory animal basis. The order to stop killing coysters was issued today. Shortly after it was issued, Gus Eastman told me that tourists had just reported seeing 3 coysters killing a fawn in the lower portion of the valley). The region, however, is overstocked with deer.
