Yosemite N.P. Nov. 28/1931. Interview with Colonel Thompson, Dept. Bears: The Colonel is discouraged about the dog experiment because: a. Rangers don't handle dogs properly. b. People tend to make pets of the dogs & think of them as their own. c. Of the difficulty of procuring the proper dogs. (Crossed out: 'White-haired terriers') are not good bear dogs. German Police or Dozers are the best. The experiment has been somewhat successful, in that it has been possible to form a "dead-line" across the valley, above which the bears are dogged, treed, trapped & shot in the rump with fine shot, and below which they are fed to make welcome. Feeding shall take place at the bear feeding ground mid-morning, afternoon, & evening. This has not hurt the evening show so far. The Colonel thinks there are too many bears in the valley. They have had to kill a few vicious ones. George Wright expressed some disapproval of shooting bears with fine shot because of the carelessness of rangers with a gun. He thought it would be better to kill outright than to run the risk of wounding or infection. The Colonel agreed to investigate the matter more closely. He has hopes that the new cub crops raised in
