Thompson
Cayuse Pass, El. 6000 ft.
Oct. 4, 1930
Day very foggy. We met two
hunters up in the pass about
one mile outside the park
boundary. They had shot
a deer and a bear two days
previously in the pass, and
had seen two other deer. They
reported "3 or 4 bear" in the
vicinity. They said hunting
is very good this year.
The bear's pelage was long,
and in good condition. Eight
dravens were in the
trees near the heads remains
of the deer.
Crows, jays & squirrels were
flocking in the trees or on
the ground by the road camp.
They were so tame that we
got within 8 ft. of them as
they fed on the ground, in
flocks of 20 to 50.
Hiking up White River we saw
deer tracks for 4 or 5 miles.
The two previously mentioned
hunters also saw a coyote
in the region near Cayuse.
The coyote was very dark.
