Yellowstone Natl. Park
Jervey Lake Trip with G.M.H.
July 31, 1931.
We rode horses to Jervey Lake via
Pelican Creek. The day was threatening
and rainy.
Canada Geese were seen in many
flocks ranging from 4 to 65. An
attempt was made to count them but
they flocked back & forth so much
that no count could be obtained. No
young were seen. The geese were alwa
found standing in the tall marshy
glass along the valley floor.
Many ducks with young were seen
on the creeks. Mallard, Barrow's
Goldeneye, and Scamp were identified.
A pair of Trumpeter Swans was
found at Jervey Lake with a family of
6 cygnets. The swans upon seeing
me, left the lake and walked
across a slough 1 mile to an adjacent
lake, just as they do at Trumpeter
Lake. Jervey Lake is an ideal swan
nesting lake; shallow rimmed with
reeds & rushes, and about 2 by 4
mile in length & breadth.
About 200 ducks were swimming
on the lakes but were too far away
to identify.
