Tompson 190. Yellowstone Natl Parks Sickle Creek Fire Area July 25-29, 1931. Range. Mt. Barlow especially, is densely forested with an abundance of browse and grass beneath the trees. It was not burned; whereas the southern portion of Chicken Ridge was. Bands of about 6 elk were seen out in the Sickle Creek meadow on several evenings. Two beautiful bulls with splendidly developed antlers in the velvet were seen down at the mouth of Heart River. The entire region is covered with elk trails. I saw no bear nor bear sign, except a few tree scratchers in this region! One bear with a lame fore foot was reported seen up near Heart Lake in the fire area. George Bagley, chief ranger, reported a pair of Swans on Heart Lake July 28, and he thought? they had young. No carcasses nor skeletons were seen in the burned forest.
