Yellowstone Natl Park
July 24, 1931. Trip with G.M.W. into
Bechler Station by truck + by foot to
Bechler River about 5 miles east of Bechler
Station.
Three tule & lily-pad lakes were seen
between 2-4 miles east of station.
They were about 1/2 mile long, each. Water
is so low this year that the beaver
houses are left on mud or dry ground
as we have found them all over the
Teton & Yellowstone country.
4 Sayphill Cranes, adults, were feeding
on the first lake 2-3 miles east of the
station. They were first seen 1/2 mile across
the lake. When we returned, 3 hrs. later,
they were on the same side of the lake
but were very wary. They saw us 1/4 mile
away when we first came through
the timber. We watched them for 15 minute
& they watched us. Then we moved, they
flew away in a flock. Their necks
in flight, are straight as with a
swan or duck. Their wing spread
appeared to be 8 ft. at least, for as
garge as the Trumpeter Swan.
Swans were reported seen on this
lake July 17 but we could not find
them; I considered the water too
low to float them. 3 female mallards
& 2 female Reddy ducks were seen. The
