186. Tompson Yellowstone Natl. Parks July 15-17, 1931. Buffalo range continued. from Mammoth to head of Miller Creek, were barred by elk. Badgley thinks they eat aspen bark even when there is no shortage of food. This is interesting as bearing on the situation in Rocky Mt. Natl Parks. Quite a few lodgepoles were barbed by porcupine over on the old east boundary where it crossed Miller Creek. No buffalo nor elk were seen in the Miller Creek basin but buffalo trails & hair were seen, where they come down to water. No grouse were seen on the whole trip. Mr. Hall caught fish in the Lamar R. below Miller Creek, but most of them were below 6" & the largest were only 8-9". The river is very low this year. Returning by the hay pasture, we could see that it was badly plumed by sun drought. Hay will be scarce for the ranch this year.
