Rocky Mt Natl Park
June 30, 1931 McGraw Ranch Trip
General Remarks:
The general summer range of the elk here is up toward Mammy Mt on the headwaters of Cow Creek West Creek. There is a good bit of aspen interspersed with the conifer forest. A large old burn in Cow Creek water shed is filling with young aspen, conifer and brush. The elk trails lead for up through this. In the fall the elk come down to the aspen groves and in Jan-March they winter around it below the ranch.
Beavers are plentiful in Cow Creek. Around the ranch they are considered a pest on account of their ditches in the hay fields. Three were trapped out last fall, but others moved in soon after.
The McGraw Ranch used to be within the park but it is outside of its present boundary.
I think this winter range should be acquired for all year. It is away from civilization and would not cause half the complication that arises near Estes Park. Besides it is better winter or summer range.
Deer tracks everywhere.
