Rocky Mt. Natl Park
Dixon & Thompson.
June 30, 1931
McGraw Ranch, to divide overlooking
West Creeks, then up ridge to the west,
around first 1000 ft peak, & return by
Cow Creek:
A hired man at McGraw's said elk
winter right at the ranch. They have
seen 100 head there at one ranch
in the winter. In the summer, elk
& deer range upon the ridge toward
Mummy Mt., where we are climbing.
Upon the ridge a mile northwest
of the ranch, jel. 8500-9100 ft. the
young aspens show quite a bit of sum-
mmer flooding. Nine-park is delightful:
Deciduous juniper, lomber pine, lodgepole
beside bunch grass & golden plume.
dwarf margeritas scattered all over the
ground.
One 5 point deer antler was found
there, indicating deer here in July & May.
Coming around the first 1000 ft. int,
we turned back into Cow Creek Valley, headed
for McGraw's Ranch. Here we ran into the
real elk winter range. On the south
facing slope is a great deal of Persica
americana, trilebes wild rose, young aspen
limestone bark, and grass & flowers. The aspens
have a distinct "high water" marks, but
nothing else shows severe browsing.
