700psoa 169. Rocky Mt. Natl Park Never Summer Range June 26, 1931 I think that elk will occupy the N.S Range when the Poudre gets hard enough to spread. But if they do, there will be a serious question of winter range. Scotty thinks the Colorado valley would make excellent elk winter range, but we can find no record of their ever wintering there on account of too much snow. A man at the saw mill, 10500 elevation, said snow was 7 ft. deep on the level last winter. This is 1500-2000 ft. higher than the Colorado valley, but the snow is 4-5 ft. deep in the valle. Almer Sprague says elk need to winter down below Grand Lake, near Flat Top Mt. Bear: Scotty says that last fall 4 bear crossed the valley just below his ranch. He thinks there may be 10-15 bear in the Devils Hip Pockey just west of above his ranch. Grizzly: a year ago last fall, Scotty saw the grizzly track 16 inches long 5 miles above his ranch.
