Thompson Rocky Mt. National Park June 23, 1931 Trip to Horseshoe Beaver and Moraine Parks with Solinsky, Madsen, Dixon, & GMH. Solinsky is trying to buy these parks as well as lower Black Canyon for elk winter range. There are extensive private holdings in each. Solinsky counted 255 elk in Beaver Park last winter. The winter range is heavily over-browsed. Plants on the sunny slopes between Black Canyon & Horseshoe Park is almost entirely gone. Piles, nine-arks, [illegible] and heavily browsed. It appears have a distinct highwater line, the young stuff is kept down, the young yellow pines are browsed to death and very little grass remains. Horses are grazed in Horseshoe & Moraine Parks. They are natural grows & willow areas of the natural winter range of the elk. If horses are removed during the summer there would be much more winter forage. Beaver, Horseshoe, & Black Canyon will probably be acquired soon. Moraine may take years.
