Rocky Mt. National Park 123, 1931 Trip to Horseshoe Beaver and Moraine Parks with Solinsky, Madgen, Diane, G.M.P. Feb 22-27 (incl.) 2.9 H, Barfoot? Solinski is trying to buy three parcels as well as lower Black Ramps for elk winter range. There are extensive private holdings in each. Sel. he counted 255 elk in Beaver Park last winter. The winter range is heavily over-browsed. Parks on the slopes between, Black Canyon & Horseshoe Park is almost entirely one: Piles, nine-pools, etc., all heavily browsed. Also have some saltwater lakes, the young stuff is shot down, the young puffin gals are browsed to death and very little grass remains. Horses are grazing in Horseshoe & Moraine Parks. They are not a part of any area of the natural winter range of the elk. If horses are removed during the summer there would be much more winter grass. Beaver Springs & Black Ramps will probably be acquired soon. Moraine may take years.
